The Rail Transport Museum—under the auspices of Transport Heritage NSW—has been renamed TRAINWORKS. Heritage trains run between Thirlmere and Buxton each Sunday. The museum hosts the annual Thirlmere Festival of Steam.

During 1988 bicentennial activities, the museum hosted a visit from LNER 4472 "The Flying Scotsman".
